Age at death: 24
Year: 1941
Ref: 532/ 10---RD Name: Southend

Civilian Wireless Operator Bratherton was one of three men (two RAF servicemen and one civilian) who perished when the newly-built Lockheed Hudson Mk.V AE640 aircraft, which they were ferrying from the Lockheed factory in the USA to the British Isles, crashed on the south-east side of the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland. The aircraft had already flown across the United States, Canada and the Atlantic Ocean and had made a stop at Limavady, near Londonderry in Ireland; the plan was to fly on to Prestwick in Scotland, the final destination. On 25 July 1941 the Hudson took flight from Limavady, in spite of a poor weather forecast given for the western Scotland area. It is thought that rain and low cloud impaired visibility, resulting in the aircraft's crashing.
The casualties of this accident were-
RAFVR Sergeant Percy KEAST,
RAF Flight Lieutenant Keith Fergus ARNOLD and
Wireless Operator Wilfred BRATHERTON.

Service-
Rank: Wireless Operator
Age: 24
Service: Civilian Technical Corps

Son of Wilfred and Mary (née Cole) Bratherton of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada [both parents were born in England].
